MEET THE INTERN DIRECTOR - JANE STAPLES

Welcome to all our web visitors. Let me introduce myself. My name is Jane Staples and I serve as the Director of the University's Advanced Technology and Manufacturing Center (ATMC) Intern Program. Engaging students in learning experiences outside the classroom is not a new endeavor for me. I have been associated with the College of Engineering at UMass Dartmouth since 1998 as the Director of Cooperative Education. Prior to this, I held the position of Director of Cooperative Education at Bristol Community College in Fall River, MA . I am an enthusiastic proponent of experiential learning, and I believe it is an essential part of education, especially today.

If you are wondering about the value of experiential learning and the Intern Program at the Advanced Technology and Manufacturing Center, here are a few things you should know - - -

As a college student, how important is experiential learning?

We live in a technologically advanced world that is continuously challenging each one of us. With the accelerating pace of innovation and change, college students should plan to graduate with a degree AND a set of skills that will allow them to cope and be successful in today's high performance workplace.

History confirms that experiential education has a powerful and positive influence on students - helping them to problem-solve through difficulties, adapt to rapidly changing conditions and shape their careers. All students need a solid academic foundation, but today, that just isn't enough. Learning by doing is a necessity.

At the Advanced Technology and Manufacturing Center (ATMC), we have incredible potential to provide students with dynamic, real-life experiences that would be impossible to deliver in a classroom setting. These experiences include project activity with industry, commercialization of faculty research, and support to our Tech Venture companies - - all of which provide rich educational opportunities for student interns. ATMC staff and faculty, serving as mentors, help students develop the skills they'll need to get ahead in this knowledge economy.

What makes an internship at the ATMC different than internships elsewhere?

The ATMC is not your average intern site. It is a very unique learning laboratory for students. Interns work side-by-side with researchers, innovators, knowledge-creators and entrepreneurs, in state-of-the-art laboratories and facilities. As a student, being part of an active team that develops new products and processes, launches new businesses, creates new knowledge, solves problems, and grows the economy, is quite an experience. Each team project, staffed with interns, generates excitement and positive energy. We try to capture that energy and enthusiasm as we carry out our mission. As a result, you will find that we have a culture and work environment that forces students to think differently and on their feet. Unlike the academic environment, the work environment at the ATMC is extremely interactive and collaborative and sometimes unpredictable. It encourages knowledge to grow through discovery and risk-taking. That's what we are all about. And, because we stress the value of making a useful contribution while learning, our student interns deliver.

Why is this Intern Program so successful?

As a new staff member of the ATMC, I must tell you that there is a very interesting phenomenon that occurs when you inject the fresh ideas and energy of highly motivated and bright students into the Center. It actually causes all of us -- staff, faculty, engineers, and industry partners - to perform at our optimal level. Having said that, as the new Intern Director, I am anxious to capitalize on this phenomenon and use it to our advantage.

Here at the ATMC, we share a vision of becoming the largest experiential learning site in this region. I am here to make that happen. The Intern Program is an integral part of the mission of the ATMC. As we involve more and more students in the ATMC's efforts of technology transfer and innovation, we shape a future workforce that should attract the attention of employers throughout this region and beyond. I look forward to realizing that goal.
